Discover the History of Walter Peak Farm

The Beginnings of Walter Peak Farm

Walter Peak Farm dates back to the late 1800s when it was established as a high-country sheep station. During its early days, sheep farming was the backbone of the economy in Queenstown and the surrounding area, with wool production playing a significant role.

Early settlers braved the isolation of living on Walter Peak, with some rowing 5–7 hours across Lake Whakatipu just to attend church in Queenstown (talk about a Sunday workout with a divine purpose!). By the 1880s, the Mackenzie family had transformed the station into a sheep-farming powerhouse, managing 40,000 sheep and earning top wool awards, including at the Wembley Exhibition.

Today, under the stewardship of RealNZ, Walter Peak blends its pastoral heritage with modern tourism experiences. This thoughtful preservation ensures the farm remains an iconic piece of Queenstown’s history and a destination for generations to come.

The Legacy of the TSS Earnslaw

Launched in the same year as the Titanic, the TSS Earnslaw’s maiden voyage was on 18 October 1912.  Originally built to transport goods, livestock, and passengers across Lake Whakatipu, the steamship was a lifeline for isolated farming communities like Walter Peak. At the time, the Earnslaw played a pivotal role in connecting remote settlements, providing vital transportation for trade, supplies, and communication.

Nearly scrapped in 1968, the TSS Earnslaw was rescued and restored by RealNZ, returning to service as a passenger vessel on Lake Whakatipu. Since then, she has been meticulously restored to her original condition, with much of what you see today remaining as it was over 100 years ago. Now the only hand-fired, commercial passenger-carrying steamship operating in the Southern Hemisphere, the TSS Earnslaw offers one of the most unique and authentic experiences in New Zealand and remains a cherished Queenstown icon.
