An attractive new spacious, modern café with indoor and outdoor dining and an intimate lounge area with a fireplace is being built on Te Anau’s waterfront.
The new café will open early to serve breakfast then lunch; before transforming into a wine bar offering tapas in the evening and then late night dessert.
The lease for the previous café was about to run out, so Real Journeys decided it would be a good time to rebuild the entire building to make it more suited to its prime position on the waterfront of Lake Te Anau.
“We’re always looking at ways to enhance our customer experience and the time our coaches spend in Te Anau is an important part of the journey in and out of Milford Sound. We decided the café needed a complete rethink and a rebuild, so that was going to take some time,” says Richard Lauder, Real Journeys Chief Executive.
Real Journeys has also committed to transforming the Te Anau Visitor Centre, also on the waterfront, next winter (2017).
“Te Anau is the heart of our business so we’ve wanted to make both investments for some time,” says Richard.
The café, to be called ‘Takahe’, will be leased by Trevor Bruce who managed the North Shore Events Centre including its cafe for over twenty years.
“I saw this as a great opportunity to do something a little different to what’s been done in town and meet some different needs. I’ve been working with my chef on our menu – and am busy employing quite a few staff. We’re going to be open some long hours which I think visitors and locals are really going to appreciate,” says Mr Bruce.
The café is scheduled to open by Labour Weekend (Friday 21 October).
