Diners taking the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak to enjoy their gourmet barbecue will be able to enjoy the outdoors despite the current wintry weather following the completion of an innovative new outdoor kitchen and pergola.
The pergola is the final stage of Real Journeys' extensive Walter Peak upgrade and means outdoor dining can now take place whatever the weather. Rain sensors close a custom designed automated roof system when it rains and PVC walls can be raised or lowered depending on the weather. In fine weather, louvres can rotate to allow the sun to stream in or angle to eliminate the sun but enjoy blue sky. There is a large open fireplace at one end and heaters throughout to keep guests warm in winter. The pergola structure is 160 square metres and extends from the original Colonel's Homestead. It is built to complement the environment and maximise the views.
A large outdoor wood-fired barbecue area is where much of the cooking will take place. The concept was designed by Masterchef judge Josh Emett and his Rata business partner, Queenstown restaurateur Fleur Caulton to provide the best aspects of a Kiwi barbecue and take it to a more sophisticated level. The cooking plate has been adapted for better control of cooking temperatures and a custom made resting rack has been made so the barbecued food is enjoyed at its optimum temperature. Guests will be able to watch chefs expertly prepare and cook their gourmet meals.
The whole project has taken over a year to achieve and became fully operational this weekend, just in time for the cold snap. Walter Peak offers gourmet barbecue lunch or dinner options and an internationally-renowned farm show experience.
